Are the Olympics Finally Over?

Well, not really, but to me they seem to be. Whenever the Olympics comes around I am never really interested in them. I have no investment in it and would rather watch yet another Red Sox game on another channel instead.

But then the Olympics start. At first I stubbornly look away and don't sit down to watch. Pam has them on constantly because she can't get enough of them. I find other things to do, like going online and playing old school classic Nintendo and knocking some homers in the greatest baseball game for the NES of all time, Bad New Baseball...

10 o'clock at night rolls around and Pam is still fixated on the games. Some guy named Phelps is swimming or something. Yeah he's famous I think. He won a bunch of gold's 4 years ago and broke a lot of world records. I remember that. Did I watch the Olympics in 2004? No way, I'm not a big fan.

Then Phelps first meet comes up. I decide to pick my head up and indulge Pam for a moment and watch with her. WOW...holy crap was he fast! That was awesome...Is he part fish or something?

I'm forever hooked. Every night I stay up later then I should just to get a glimpse of Phelps break another record and win another goal. And then I find myself watching the other swimmers as well and rooting for them. Go USA!

It's infectious. Phelps makes it so. His dominance of the sport makes you want to know who his competition is and ask why he doesn't do every race there is. Why only 8 of them? Well, for one it's because he has to qualify which accounts for 17 total races in just over a weeks time. That's a lot. Just doing one race is tough to do. If you don't think so, why don't you go start training for 2012 already. Yeah I THOUGHT so!

Anyway, for some reason now I am just as obsessed with the Olympics as Pam is. It's on all the time at our house. We watched most of the women's marathon for goodness sake! Beach volleyball is fun to watch too. Well at least Girl's beach volleyball. Haha, just kidding...or am I? *duh duh duhhhhhh*

Now it's mostly track and field events. They are okay, but nothing tops swimming. I never thought I would say that, but Phelps made swimming the most entertaining sport of the Olympics. He does things right. He doesn't show boat (No thanks Lightning Bolt or whatever the hell you call yourself). He is just an all around stand up guy and a great role model for young kids. Hard work, dedication, and doing things right can get you far in life.

I'm a little burnt out right now, but will probably still watch many more Olympic events this week. I feel like I need to. It's time to be patriotic and root for the men and women like Phelps that bust their butts year round for a chance to represent our country and show that it's okay to root for the home team and chant U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A!

Go Team...

Yes! Phelps said today in an interview that he is definitely going to be back for the Olympics in London, 2012. He also wants to bring swimming to the forefront and have people watch it every year instead of every four years...bring it on, Phelpsie!
