As I was in the bathroom just moments ago I had a thought. This was not a new thought, but something that my brother and I have discussed on more than one occasion. The question is, why do men spit and more importantly why do we spit when we take a leak?
Now I know this is a strange topic, but I want to see if anyone else out there has thought about this. I have searched a little bit online for some answers, but really got no where and read nothing about a reason for spitting while going to the bathroom.
Here are some theories we have tossed around:
- It's a primitive instinct, sort of like marking your territory
- Because males pee standing up it triggers a reaction, creating excess saliva
- Another way of releasing unnecessary toxins and build up in the body
I know my brother has even taking this a step further and took a poll at one of his previous jobs. I do not have the full results of that poll, but have an idea of what he found:
- Not all men spit while peeing
- Some men spit only when using the urinal
- Some men spit only when going outside
- Some spit before they pee
- Some spit during
- Some spit after going
- Some spit more than once or randomly
I fall under the last category. I don't always feel the need to spit per say, but sometimes I do at the beginning, during or at the end and sometimes more than once. It all just depends on how I feel I guess...
There is no rhythm or reason to it really. I know we aren't alone here. We have the initial research that tells us this is not just some wacky "Starkey" trait. But I am curious. Has anyone else actually stopped to think about this?
Men, tell me your thoughts about it and women, ask your significant others or brothers or dads about this. Let me know what you find. I will get to the bottom of this mystery...

The most common "spitters" are young males in the prime years, generally the years when testosterone levels are at their highest.
I do not spit when I pee, indoors or out. Not now/not in younger days.
Must be your mother's genes!
